these lights are painting me.
different colors spill across broken arms
brushstrokes are carefully placed;
my features are so sharp.
this doesn’t come easy for me
I didn’t choose the colors that are filling up the room,
but i am drowning in them.
a palette like a swimming pool,
and at the bottom my lungs are full.
I’ve swallowed too much yellow.
at your feet i’m coughing up a painting
oil paints are toxic and so expensive.
you weren’t there when i needed you
when my head fell apart
this in my hands was so new to me.
you let me down
i almost forgot your names.
but your daughter is so much older now…
i don’t know
i’m a self portrait on a red wall
